What if I’m not very fit or strong? Paddling a dragon boat is definitely a physical activity, but one that's within reach for most people. Everyone is welcome! Don't want to paddle? Be a drummer or a sweep! Being a drummer is a great way to enjoy the thrill of dragon boating. You still get wet and you also get to scream at the crew! Sweeps are always in demand too. The sweep stands at the back of the boat and is responsible for steering and safety. Sweeps also have the best view of what’s going on and it’s an absolute blast. Sweep training is run by our good friends at the Central Region Dragon Boat Association and is free. Get in touch if either of these interest you. On water training There is an open day in the harbour in October each year. This is perfect for newbies to get an idea for what it's like to be out on a boat. Details will be posted on our Facebook page. The team will train in the harbour once a week for 8 weeks from mid-Jan to March 2022 at one of the following times: 5 to 6pm, 6 to 7pm, 7 to 8pm. Sessions are 1 hour and are basically mandatory. Our training day will be confirmed November or December. On land training We have previously run 30 min fitness sessions a few times a week, if there’s enough interest. Sessions are at Boyd Wilson field (Kelburn campus) and cover things like running, push-ups, burpees and so on. Go at your own pace. Not compulsory but the fitter you are, the better. We are very open to your suggestions for random fitness training things - a few of us did the Tough Guy & Gal Challenge this year - it was a hoot but exhausting! |
